ECG is a painless, rapid test that records the heart's electrical activity. It is used to evaluate heart rhythm, enlargement, past heart attack signs, and electrolyte imbalances. The test takes 5-10 minutes and requires no preparation.
ECG is essential in the initial evaluation of chest pain, palpitations, and shortness of breath. It also serves as a basic indicator of heart health in routine check-ups.
Echocardiography uses ultrasound waves to visualize the heart. Chamber sizes, wall thickness, valve structure and function, and pumping strength (ejection fraction) are assessed. The procedure is painless, radiation-free, and takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
Stress echocardiography evaluates how the heart performs under exertion. It is preferred when coronary artery disease is suspected but ECG findings are inconclusive.
Holter is a portable ECG device that records heart rhythm continuously for 24 hours during daily life. It is used to evaluate intermittent symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, or fainting. The patient goes about normal activities while wearing the device.
For less frequent symptoms, 7-14 day extended Holter or event recorders may be used. While some modern smartwatches can perform rhythm recording, medically certified devices are the standard for diagnosis.
The stress test evaluates the heart's response to exertion while walking on a treadmill. ECG, blood pressure, and heart rate are continuously monitored. It is used to diagnose coronary artery disease, assess its severity, and evaluate treatment response.
Patients should wear comfortable clothing and avoid heavy meals 2-3 hours before the test. Medications affecting heart rate, such as beta blockers, may need adjustment under medical supervision before testing.

ECG shows the heart's electrical activity while echocardiography reveals structural and mechanical properties. They provide different information and complement each other.
Holter devices are not waterproof. You need to remove it for showering. The removal period is recorded as a gap, which is normal.
The test usually takes 8-12 minutes, depending on the patient's physical capacity and the purpose of the test.
ECG, echocardiography and Holter involve no radiation. Advanced imaging like coronary CT angiography uses low-dose radiation.
