First Aid for Heart Attack: 7 Life-Saving Steps

A heart attack occurs when a coronary artery becomes suddenly blocked. The most common symptom is a squeezing or pressure-like pain in the center of the chest that may radiate to the arm, shoulders, neck, or back.

If you think you are having a heart attack, call emergency services immediately. While waiting, sit calmly in a semi-sitting position and loosen tight clothing.

Never attempt to drive someone having a heart attack to the hospital. If the patient loses consciousness and stops breathing, begin CPR immediately. Early intervention multiplies survival chances.
