Heart Palpitations and Arrhythmia: What You Need to Know
Palpitation is the awareness of one's heartbeat. Not every palpitation means an arrhythmia. Stress, caffeine, alcohol, or fatigue can cause temporary palpitations in anyone.
Arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm — too fast, too slow, or irregular — caused by a problem in the heart's electrical system. Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained arrhythmia.
Diagnosis uses ECG, Holter monitoring, and event recorders when needed. Echocardiography assesses underlying heart disease.
Treatment may include medication, ablation, or device implantation depending on the type and severity of the arrhythmia.
