Are Heart Attack Symptoms Different in Women?
Heart attack symptoms in women may differ from the classic chest pain presentation. While chest pressure or pain is the most common symptom in both sexes, women more frequently experience shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, back or jaw pain, and extreme fatigue.
Heart attacks typically occur 10 years later in women than men, but risk increases rapidly after menopause. Diabetic women have a higher heart attack risk than diabetic men.
Smoking increases heart attack risk more in women than in men. Combined use of oral contraceptives and smoking significantly elevates risk.
Women tend to delay seeking emergency care longer than men. Awareness of heart attack symptoms in women needs to be increased.
