When Should Chest Pain Be Taken Seriously?
Chest pain can result from many causes, from heart attack to musculoskeletal issues. The key is distinguishing life-threatening conditions. Cardiac chest pain is typically a pressure, squeezing, or burning sensation in the center of the chest.
Heart attack pain may radiate to the jaw, left arm, or back. Accompanying symptoms include shortness of breath, cold sweat, nausea, and dizziness. If these occur, call emergency services immediately.
Musculoskeletal pain usually worsens with movement or deep breathing, has point tenderness, and does not radiate. Reflux-related pain worsens after meals or when lying down.
When in doubt, the safest approach is to visit the emergency room. Timely intervention is critical for saving heart muscle during a heart attack.
